Tucked away between the Bitterroot Mountains and Coeur d'Alene River, the road to the summit is totally unpaved. It’s called Little Guard Peak Road. Vehicles with high clearance and good tires are strongly recommended. The summit hosts a fire lookout tower built atop the summit in 1957, with spectacular views of the Coeur d'Alene River and the Bitterroot Mountains.

Located within the Panhandle National Forest, the road to the summit is 16.89km (10.5 miles) long starting at Coeur D'Alene River Road. The road is very steep, hitting a 22% of maximum gradient through some of the ramps. The elevation gain is 1082 meters. The average gradient is 6.40%.
