A defiant road to Baldy Mountain in ID
Baldy Mountain is a high mountain peak at an elevation of 2.536m (8,320ft) above the sea level, located in Bannock County, in the southeastern part of the U.S. state of Idaho.
Set high in the Portneuf Range, within the Caribou-Targhee National Forest, the road to the summit is totally unpaved. It’s called Road W. This road is usually impassable from late October through late June or early July (depending on snow). It is a rough and rocky road and the going is slow.
Located north of Sedgwick Peak, a 4WD high clearance vehicle is required. The road to the summit is pretty steep. Starting at Thunder Mountain Road, the ascent is 6.3km (3.91 miles) long. Over this distance the elevation gain is 563 meters. The average gradient is 8.93%.
