A steep paved road to Pu’u O Kila Lookout in Hawaiʻi
Pu’u O Kila is a jaw dropping lookout at an elevation of 1.266m (4,153ft) above the sea level, located in Kauaʻi County, Hawaiʻi, United States. The view to the coast is legendary.
Located in Kokee State Park, the road to the summit is totally paved. It’s called Highway 550. It’s a wonderful drive up the canyon road. The lookout sits at the very end of the road. The summit hosts a parking lot.
Starting from Waimea, the road to the lookout is 30.89km (19.2 miles) long. The winding road to the lookout is pretty narrow and steep, full of scenic pull-off spots. Clouds permitting, the views are superb at this location, offering panoramas of the valley, ridged mountains, the ocean and the Alakai Swamp (the highest swamp in the world). It is second wettest place on Earth, where over 450 inches of rain falls per year and is often covered in a shroud of mist.
