A gravel summer road to De Herrera Lake
De Herrera Lake is a high mountain lake at an elevation of 3.308m (10,853ft) above the sea level, located in Conejos County, in the U.S. state of Colorado.
Nestled in the San Juan Mountains of Colorado, within the Rio Grande National Forest, the road to the lake is totally unpaved. 4x4 vehicle recommended. Accessibility is largely limited to the summer season. It suffers the harsh meteorological conditions of the area every winter.
Always check the weather forecast before you start your journey. Starting from the paved State Highway 17 (SH 17), the road is 8.22 km (5.11 mi) long. It tops out at 3.374m (11,069ft) above the sea level.
