A drive through Glenwood Canyon is a feast for the eyes
Located on the boundary of Garfield and Eagle counties in western Colorado, in USA, the 12.5-mile stretch of Interstate-70 through Glenwood Canyon is a marvel of engineering.
The road is a 20-kilometer (12.5-mile)-long network of 40 viaducts and bridges and 3 tunnels. A must do travel in a lifetime. Open to traffic throughout the year, may be closed for short periods in winter when the weather is bad. The paved road that passes through Glenwood Canyon will give you some dramatic views. The stunning drive alongside the Colorado River was completed on October 14, 1992 but a road had existed through spectacular the canyon from pioneer times.
Located in the rugged Rocky Mountains, surrounded by the vast White River National Forest, the canyon was carved by the power of the Colorado River over three million years. The very scenic drive through the canyon follows the Colorado River as it winds through the canyon with its cliffs towering a maximum of 2,000 feet above the river. The freeway is also prone to rockslides in the canyon.
