Driving through the defiant Highway del Sol
Autopista del Sol (Mexico City-Acapulco, Mexico 95D) is a modern 4 lanes toll highway located in south of Mexico that communicates Mexico City with Acapulco.
The highway was inaugurated in 1994 under the administration of Salinas de Gortari. The highway traverses the rugged mountains of Sierra Madre del Sur by a series of tunnels and bridges, by the time it was a huge infrastructure engineer project, with Quetzalapa, El Papagayo and El Zapote bridges one of the tallest in the nation during that time until surpassed by the new Durango-Mazatlán in 2013. This highway is particularly dangerous due high speed traveling by reckless drivers, some short curves and frequent mudslides at rainy season, mostly causes by mountains cuts that collapsed into moving vehicles. The highway also includes in Acapulco city, the longest tunnel in the nation, the Maxi tunnel. Also this highway often gets closed due protesters from Guerrero state teachers in the area around Chilpancingo, causing major delays and traffic to the users, mostly demanding security changes to the government, corruption and impunity.
