El Chorro
La Carbonera (Mexico 57D, autopista Saltillo-Matehuala) offers spectacular views of the Sierra Madre Oriental high mountains: desert canyons, some pine forest and a segment of sharp/dangerous curves in same highway, step grades, even a tunnel in the route.
The highest elevation of this road, nicknamed El Chorro, is at 2.180 m above the sea level near the junction to San Antonio de las Alazanas. Near this area is located Mexico’s only ski resort (Monterreal at 2.720 masl), and the road goes down to Ramos Arizpe at 1300 masl. The highway traverses a canyon/river route, surrounded by huge mountains. It’s the most dangerous segment in the route between Matehuala-Saltillo, due the sharp curves and for speeding. Also the route it’s prone to weather conditions such flood by rains, mudslides and fog.
