La Marquesa, one of the deadliest highways in Mexico
Mexico City-Toluca (Mexico 15D or 134D) is a windy 6 lanes highway that links Mexico City and Toluca in a length of 45 km. It’s a mountainous highway with a maximum elevation of 3.170m (10,400ft) above the sea level.
Nicknamed as La Marquesa, this is one of the deadliest highways in Mexico, mainly because drivers don’t know how to take curves or simply because of speeding, also frequent stopovers as like restaurants, shops and bus stops next to the highway makes a big danger to users. Fog it’s common in the area very often, higher traffic volumes and sharp curves make a great challenge to drive with both cities near each other, many people use this highway as a daily commute for work and live. Currently there’s a new subway line construction project along this highway, expected to be completed by 2017.
