The insane road to Cumbre de Guerachi
Cumbre de Guerachi is a high mountain town at an elevation of 2.440m (8,005ft) above the sea level, located in the northern Mexican state of Chihuahua.
The road to the town links Agua Blanca and Guerachi. The drive includes more than 100 hairpin turns and it’s not a viable option during rainy season. It is not a ride for the faint-hearted. Conditions vary depending on weather and time of year and by how recently the road has been maintained. It is a good idea to ask about road conditions before setting off.
This road tests the skill, and courage, of any driver. It is a suicide through an insane road bordering an awful ravine. The road is barely wide enough for two cars to pass, there are no guard rails, and the curves are so severe that it is impossible to know if traffic is approaching from the opposite direction. It’s definitely not for anyone suffering from vertigo or a fear of landslides. The road is pretty rough and extremely narrow, with just enough room for a car in many places. Due to the extreme drop-off pay very careful attention to the driving, but the biggest risk is the chance of any on-coming traffic with limited sight lines and very, very few places to pass. Only the suicidal, the insane, or the paid-to-do-this should ever drive down.
