Driving the unpaved yet scenic Farwell Canyon Road in British Columbia
Farwell Canyon Road is a very scenic yet dusty drive, located in the heart of the Chilcotin District of British Columbia, in Canada.
How long is Farwell Canyon Road?
The road is totally unpaved. It’s 117 km (72,70ft) long, running west-east from Taseko Lake Road to Chilcotin-Bella Coola Highway, to the south of Riske Creek.
Do I need a 4x4 vehicle on the Farwell Canyon Road?
Located in the southern part of the country, in the Central Cariboo-Chilcotin Region, it is drivable using a car, and no 4x4 vehicle is necessary. You have to drive slowly to avoid damaging your car and avoiding cows.
Is the Farwell Canyon Road challenging?
The road features a few steep sections, topping out at 1.592m (5,223ft) above sea level. It’s a narrow dusty road but the views are stunning. Be aware that the drive is pretty steep with, very large, working logging trucks in the area and other commercial traffic on it. Much dust is raised by vehicles on the road. The road is narrow and winding near the canyon with miles of switchbacks to get down to the Chilcotin River. It is pretty difficult in wet weather.
