A Wild 4x4 Road to Moose Mountain in Alberta
Moose Mountain is a high mountain peak at an elevation of 2,347 m (7,700 ft) above sea level, located in the province of Alberta, Canada. It’s one of the highest roads in the country.
Where is Moose Mountain?
The peak is located west of Calgary, in the Kananaskis Improvement District, in the southern part of the country. A Forestry Service fire lookout known as the Moose Mountain Lookout Tower exists at the summit, which is the third building to have occupied the site for this purpose since the first was built in 1929.
Why is it Called Moose Mountain?
Resembling a moose lying peacefully on the horizon, the peak was designated as Moose Mountain in 1949. The summit offers an amazing 360-degree view of the surrounding area, complete with picnic tables. Some scenes in the films Land and Brokeback Mountain were shot on and around Moose Mountain.
How Long is the Road to Moose Mountain?
The dirt road to the summit is completely unpaved and is called Moose Mountain Fire Road. A 4x4 vehicle is required. Starting from the paved AB-66 road, the road to the summit is 13.4 km (8.32 miles) long. Over this distance, the elevation gain is 930 m, and the average gradient is 6.94%.
Is the Road to Moose Mountain Open?
Set high in Alberta's Rockies, the road is passable from May 15 to November 30 each year. It is closed with a gate to private vehicles after a parking lot known as the Moose Mountain Trailhead Parking.
