Osman Gazi Köprüsü: a bridge with earthquakes and high winds
Osman Gazi Bridge is a 2,682m (8,799ft) long bridge located along the eastern end of the Sea of Marmara, in Turkey. Earthquakes and high winds are the main hazards. It’s one of the most spectacular bridges in the world.
The bridge was opened in 2016. It’s a 3 km-long six-lane bridge and the fourth-longest suspension bridge in the world by the length of its central span. The suspension bridge over the Marmara Sea is especially earthquake-proof. More than 400 sensors can detect the slightest vibration and, if necessary, raise the alarm in the event of excessive vibration and closing the bridge immediately. On March 21, 2015, a catwalk broke away from its bolted joint cable on the south tower during the construction at the bridge and fell into the water.
