The Military Unpaved Road to Mount Kandil in Hakkari Province

Kandil Dağı is a high mountain peak at an elevation of 3,456m (11,338ft) above sea level, located in the Yüksekova District of Turkey. It’s one of the highest roads in Europe.

Where is Mount Kandil?

The peak is located in Hakkâri Province, in the southeastern part of the country, not far from the Iraq and Iran borders.

Can I Drive to Mount Kandil?

The road to the summit is totally unpaved. Built in 2018, it’s a military road closed to private vehicles. The drive is challenging, with steep sections, narrow parts, dangerous drops, hundreds of turns, and many hairpin bends.

How Long is the Road to Mount Kandil?

Set high in the Ridge Mountains over Cennet Cehennem Vadisi, the road to the summit is about 18km (12 miles) long, starting from the town of Büyükçiftlik. It’s one of the highest roads in the country.
