A Wild, Defiant Unpaved Road to Hohsaas in the Swiss Pennine Alps

Hohsaas is a high mountain peak at an elevation of 3,146m (10,321ft) above sea level, located in the district of Visp in the canton of Valais, Switzerland. It’s one of the highest roads in Europe.

Where is Hohsaas?

The peak is located in the southern part of the country, near the Italian border. At the summit, there’s a mountain cabin known as Berghütte Hohsaas.

How Long is the Road to Hohsaas?

The road to the summit is totally unpaved. It’s a chairlift access trail. Starting from Saas-Grund, the road to the summit is about 14km long. Over this distance, the elevation gain is 1,553m, and the average gradient is 11.09%.

Is the Road to Hohsaas Drivable in Winter?

Set high in the Swiss Pennine Alps, the road is open only in summers. It’s one of the highest roads in the country.
