Santuario de Nuestra Señora del Acebo
The Shrine of Our Lady of the Holy Tree sits at an elevation of 1.172m (3,845ft) above the sea level located in the southwest of the Principality of Asturias in Spain.
Starting from Carballo (on CN-4 road), the punishing slopes of the road are pretty steep. It’s 8.9km long with an elevation gain of 649 meters. The average gradient is 7.29%. The road is asphalted, but narrow in some places only wide enough for one vehicle, and in many places bordered by a drop of hundreds of meters (many hundreds of feet) unprotected by guardrails.
The sanctuary was completed in 1590. Driving at night, or in poor visibility, is not recommended for drivers unfamiliar with the road. This road has innumerable twists and turns. Open to traffic throughout the year. May be closed for short periods in winter when the weather is bad. The climb has been featured on the Spanish Vuelta race.
