Puntal Refuge
Refugio del Puntal is a private mountain refuge at an elevation of 2.242m (7,355ft) above the sea level, located in the region of Andalucia, in the province of Granada, in Spain. It’s one of the highest roads of the country.
The road to the summit, located in the Sierra Nevada mountain range, is gravel and sandy, with some rocky parts. The road is usually impassable from November to April (weather permitting). 4x4 vehicle with high clearance. Thunderstorm activity can quickly change unpaved roads to four-wheel-drive condition or make them impassable.
The hut is also known as La Piuca o Casilla del Mundo. The road is pretty steep. Starting from A-4132 road, at 946 meters above the sea level, the ascent is 17.3 km long. Over this distance the elevation gain is 1.296 meters. The average gradient is 7.49%, with sections up to 12%.
