A wild unpaved road to Poqueira Refuge
Refugio Poqueira is a high mountain refuge at an elevation of 2.501m (8,205ft) above the sea level, located in the region of Andalucia, in the province of Granada, in Spain. It’s one of the highest roads of the country.
The road to the summit, located within the Sierra Nevada mountains, is gravel, rocky, tippy and bumpy at times. The road is usually impassable from October to June (weather permitting). Great trail for experienced wheelers. The refuge sits below the SW face of Mulhacen, the highest mountain in mainland Spain and the whole Iberian Peninsular. In order to protect the wild nature of the national park, the road is currently closed to any kind of vehicles, even bicycles.
Avoid driving in this area if unpaved mountain roads aren't your strong point. 4x4 vehicle required. Stay away if you're scared of heights. Expect a trail pretty steep. Wet conditions may make for tough driving along the muddy road. The hut is the mountain base for exploring Mulhacen and other peaks in this area. It’s open all year. In winter Mulhacen is a serious proposition.
