The road to Estany Llong: be ready to make room for oncoming vehicles
Estany Llong is a glacial lake at an elevation of 2.012m (6,601ft) above the sea level, located in the province of Lleida, in the autonomous community of Catalonia, northern Spain.
Nestled within the Aigüestortes i Estany de Sant Maurici National Park, one of the fourteen Spanish National Parks, the winding road to the lake is pretty challenging. It’s mostly paved (7,7 km) with concrete parts. The final 4 km are totally unpaved. 4x4 vehicles only. During and after a storm the road may be impassable, even with a four-wheel-drive vehicle. There’s a mountain refuge at the lake. It has room for 47 people
The narrow road to the lake is closed to vehicles in some periods. The drive offers stunning views of the Pyrenees range and the Estany de Llebreta, Llebreta Lake. Starting from the L500 road, the ascent is 11.9km long. Over this distance the elevation gain is 695 meters. The average gradient is 5.84%.
