How to get by car to Orchilla Lighthouse in the Canary Islands?
Faro de Orchilla, also known as Faro de Punta de la Orchilla, is an iconic lighthouse located on the western side of El Hierro, the smallest of the Canary Islands, in Spain. It marks the most southwesterly point in Spain.
When was Orchilla Lighthouse built?
Located at the Punta de la Orchilla, the construction of the famous lighthouse facing the sea began in 1924, using a stone brought from the municipality of Arucas in Gran Canaria, with the imaginary line of the meridian serving as its base. The complex included the typical buildings for this type of construction: the cistern, the lighthouse keeper’s house, and the lantern. The construction was completed in 1930, but the lighthouse was not lit until September 25, 1933, providing sailors with a beacon to guide them on their journey from Europe to America. This monument is the most important civil building on the island of El Hierro, gradually becoming one of the island’s symbols. Until a few years ago, it was the prime meridian. The sky at Orchilla Lighthouse is perfect for those who enjoy stargazing, as there is no light pollution. You can admire multiple constellations all year round, but Taurus is prominent in the autumn.
