Caldera de Bandama, a breathtaking volcanic crater, is located between the municipalities of Santa Brigida, Telde, and Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, in the northeastern part of the island of Gran Canaria, in the Province of Las Palmas of the Canary Islands.

What is Pico Bandama?

Caldera de Bandama is a volcanic depression approximately 200 meters deep and 1000 meters in diameter. Formed by explosive volcanic activity between 4000 and 5000 years ago, its creation was influenced by successive eruptions that shaped the island. Evidence suggests that the caldera's interior was used for farming in pre-Hispanic times. Today, it is a popular destination for day-trippers, cruise ship passengers, and hikers, offering plenty to explore for several hours.

Why is it called Pico Bandama?

Tucked away in the Atlantic Ocean, the peak is named after Daniel Van Damme, a 16th-century Flemish merchant who lived in Gran Canaria and purchased the land where the caldera now lies for grape cultivation.

When was the road to Pico Bandama built?

The road was built in the 1940s to create access to the peak where an ancient balcony-house was constructed in 1942.

How long is the road to Pico Bandama?

Starting from GC15 Road, to the north of Montebravo, the road to the summit is entirely paved. It’s called GC-802 Road and is about 7 km (4.34 miles) long.

Is the road to Pico Bandama challenging?

Running through the vineyards of Tafira Alta, the road has narrow and steep sections. It’s prone to rockslides, so check the opening and closure times before starting your journey.

Is Pico Bandama worth the drive?

The summit hosts a parking lot and a natural viewpoint known as Mirador del Pico de Bandama, from where you can see a panoramic view of the municipality of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, the Bandama volcanic caldera, and much of the northeastern area of the island of Gran Canaria. In addition, the viewpoint has a Tourist Information Point.
