Adventure along the wild Old Terradets Canyon Road
Old Terradets Canyon Road is the name of a very challenging drive located in the comarca of Pallars Jussà, in the province of Lleida, Catalonia, in northern Spain. It’s one of the most scenic canyon roads of Spain.
Set high in the Serra del Montsec Protected Natural Area, within the Montsec Mountain Range, in the Pre-Pyrenees, the non-maintained road is mostly paved, in pretty poor conditions. It’s a road to die for (or die on, if you're not careful!). The road winds as a river, cutting snakes into the cliffs and runs as a single track road along the mountainside for some distance with nowhere to pass another vehicle.
Opened in 1912, the road through the Terradets gorge is 2,5 km (1,55 miles) long and features 2 unlit and narrow tunnels, running along the southern shore of Terradets dam. The drive offers stunning views of the reservoir.
At the end of the 1970s, the road was bypassed by the new C-13 national road. The road can be blocked by rockslides or snow when the weather is bad. It's normal for your palms to sweat looking at those photos, imagine what it must have been like before the barriers. This road raises everyone’s heartbeat.
