The old and abandoned road to Puerto de Rañadoiro
Puerto de Rañadoiro is a mountain pass at an elevation of 1.178m (3,864ft) above the sea level, located in the province and autonomous community of Asturias, in northern Spain. The road to the summit was bypassed by a tunnel.
Tucked away in the Sierra de Rañadoiro range, the road to the summit, also known as Puerto del Trayecto, is currently closed to vehicles and in the process of being dismantled. The old road was paved and pretty steep with very little traffic. It was 11.3km long, running from Cangas del Narcea to Degaña, with a 5.3% of average gradient. The road was known as ‘Camino Real del Trayecto’ and heavily used in the Middle Ages. Open to traffic throughout the year, it was often closed for short periods in winter when the weather was bad.
In 2010, the old road was bypassed by a tunnel known as Rañadoiro tunnel. The tunnel is 1.924 meters long, part of the 3,930 meters bypass of the AS-15 that replaces the 11.3 kilometers of the former route through the port of Rañadoiro.
