Poço do Inferno Waterfall, a sensational drive

Cascata Poço do Inferno (Hell's Well) is a spectacular ravine/waterfall about 10 feet high located in Centro Region and Beira Interior Norte Subregion, in Portugal. The road has some narrow parts, impassable for 2 medium cars.

Poço do Inferno

Located in the heart of the Serra Estela Natural Park within the Serra da Estrela Mountains, the waterfall was formed by the waters of the Leandres stream. The zigzag road to the waterfall is very winding with many turns. The road is totally paved running among trees. Not recommended if you don't know how to reverse.

The drive offers stunning views of the Zezere valley. The forest road is worth the trip alone and reaches a parking lot where it starts the main path to the waterfall. It has generally good condition but it is very dangerously narrow without many passing points. Be careful: this road is not for the newbies. Drive carefully.

Starting from Manteigas heading south on the N338 towards Torre, the road is 5.7 km long. Open to traffic throughout the year, may be closed for short periods in winter when the weather is bad. This waterfall can freeze in the harshest winters and be dry in the summers. Best visited in the spring. Later May or June is also recommended.
