A Most Tricky Scenic Drive to Rifugio La Baita

Located in the Stelvio National Park, in the north-east of Italy, the road to the summit is mostly unpaved. Starting from Frontale, the road is paved and it’s unpaved beyond Fumero. The road is unprotected by guardrails. Any barriers along the edge afford little more than token protection. The hut is located on the top of the hill, with a unique view over the whole valley. 4x4 vehicles only. The road is closed to private vehicles.
The road to the hut is pretty steep. Starting from Strada Statale 38, in Frontale, the ascent is 10.2 km (6.33 miles) long. Over this distance the elevation gain is 909 meters. The average gradient is 8.91%. The hut is starting point for hikes on foot (Corno di Boero-Savoretta and Sobretta Glaciers) in summer, whereas in winter with snowshoes or off track skis (Pollore Peak-Savoretta Glacier).
