The Ultimate Guide to Traveling the Road R440

Set high in the Slieve Bloom Mountains, the road, nicknamed as the Slive Bloom Road, is totally paved but pretty steep and narrow. There are some narrow sections -scarcely wide enough for two cars- where if two vehicles have to pass each other, one might have to reverse for some kilometers of winding narrow road to get to a place wide enough to pass.
The road is 35.9 km long and links the villages of Birr (in County Offaly) and Mountrath (in County Laois). The road tops out at at 453m (1,486ft) above the sea level.
