There are several river crossings along the route, with Blandá and Svartá being among the deepest. Crossing large rivers requires caution and experience. Avoid attempting it alone or during heavy rain, as water levels can rise quickly due to rainfall or warm temperatures, making crossings dangerous. Seek local advice before attempting any fords. Only well-equipped jeeps or larger 4x4 vehicles should attempt these sections. Always check the depth and current before entering the water, as conditions can change rapidly. In addition to the main rivers, smaller water holes may appear along the way. While the route offers spectacular views during the day, it becomes risky at night due to limited visibility. Rental insurance typically excludes water damage, including any caused by river crossings. Be aware that some fords may reach depths of up to 1.4 meters, making proper vehicle preparation essential. The debris on the riverbed is also rough and unpredictable.
