Road 955 (Vattarnesvegur)
Road 955 (Vattarnesvegur) is a very scenic journey located around the Vattarnes peninsula, in the Eastern Region of Iceland.
The road is mostly unpaved and can sometimes be a little rough so just take your time. It’s 48.3 km long and links the villages of Reyðarfjörður and Fáskrúðsfjörður. The little-used coastal road is gravel but suitable for normal cars as long as you drive carefully. The drive is very scenic and should not be missed. It runs along the south side of Reyðarfjörður fjord and around the Vattarnes peninsula. It offers great views to the hollow cliff island of Skrúður.
Extreme care with fog. It can be very thick. This track is not very busy. The drive offers breathtaking landscapes. Extreme care with falling rocks. The road can be rough at times but also because you will stop many times to take pictures. It needs to be driven with care for there are pot holes, rocks at times but the rewards are plentiful. You will have steep mountainside to one side, gravel road underneath and a very steep, little to non guard railed dropdown to the ocean in parts of the way.
