Driving the F946, One of the Most Deserted Roads in Iceland

F946 (Loðmundarfjarðarvegur) is a very scenic drive located in the East Fjords of Iceland. The drive offers breathtaking mountain landscapes and is only suitable for 4x4 vehicles. It’s one of the famous F Roads in the country.

How Long is F946 Road?

Situated on the coast of Borgarfjörður Eystri, the road is 37.5 km (23.30 miles) long. It runs from Borgarfjörður Eystri (Road 94) to Klyppsstadhir, a mountain hut that includes up to 38 sleeping bag spaces.

Is Road F946 Unpaved?

The road is completely unpaved, with extreme heights in some locations. It is a rough and challenging route, suitable only for vehicles with high clearance. The track has many large rocks, and the steep downslopes along the way can make it a dangerous ride for off-road beginners. You can expect some serious hills, but the beautiful scenery makes it all worth it.

Is Road F946 Open?

The road tops out at 472 m (1,548 ft) above sea level. It’s only open during the summer months, usually between late June and early September. Outside of summer, the road is not maintained and is, for all intents and purposes, impassable. It is not recommended to drive unaccompanied. In some areas, there is no cell phone service, and passing traffic or nearby inhabitants are very limited in case of a breakdown.

How Long Does It Take to Drive the F946 Road?

Surrounded by lunar landscapes, driving the road without stopping will take most people between 2 and 3 hours. It’s an incredibly scenic drive with fascinating geological formations to look out for. Along the way, you’ll find yourself in a natural wonderland of landscape and geology. The road does not connect to any other roads, so be prepared to take the same route back and account for the 2-hour drive when you head out.
