Driving the wild Road F980 (Kollmuluvegur)
F980 (Kollmúluvegur) is a dangerous road located in the southeast of Iceland. The drive offers breathtaking landscapes, but it’s only suitable for 4x4 vehicles with high ground clearance and experienced drivers – there is a deep, fast-flowing river to cross.
How long is Road F980 (Kollmúluvegur)?
The road is 25km (16 miles) long, running from Highway 1 (Ring Road) to Illikambur. It is completely unpaved, rough, and challenging, suited only for 4-wheel drive vehicles with high clearance. The track is in poor condition, with many large rocks, potholes, ruts, and boulders on the surface. Driving in a small passenger car is irresponsible and can be very dangerous. The drive is strongly discouraged because the river crossings are unpredictable and hazardous. It is one of the famous F Roads in the country.
Is Road F980 (Kollmúluvegur) unpaved?
Surrounded by lunar landscapes, the road is only open during the summer months, usually between late June and early September. Expect solitude, as this track is not heavily traveled. It is not recommended to drive unaccompanied. In the event of a breakdown, there is very little traffic, no nearby inhabitants, and no cell phone service in certain areas. Along the way, you’ll experience a true natural wonderland of landscapes and geology. This is one of the most extreme mountain roads in Iceland.
How to cross rivers along Road F980 (Kollmúluvegur)?
Along the route, you’ll have to cross the deep and fast-flowing Skyndidalsá River. Crossing large rivers requires experience. Do not attempt to cross with only one vehicle or during heavy rain. It can be treacherous if the water level rises due to rain or warm weather. Only well-equipped jeeps and larger vehicles are capable of crossing the rivers. Attempting to cross in a small jeep is highly discouraged. This river is considered unsafe for all but the most experienced drivers with high ground clearance super trucks.
How deep is the river crossing along Road F980 (Kollmúluvegur)?
If you get stuck in the river, call 112. Always check the river to ensure it’s not too deep, as water levels can change rapidly with rain or warmer temperatures. This road is amazing by day, but can be dangerous at night. Rental car insurance does not cover damage from water, including damage caused by river crossings. The river to Lónsöræfi can change quickly from relatively shallow (1 meter) to deep (2+ meters) in a short period.
