Road 590 (Klofningsvegur)
Road 590 (Klofningsvegur) is a very scenic bumpy route located in the mountainous Klofningsvegur Peninsula, in Western Region, on the western coast of Iceland.
It’s a loop road, starting and ending at Vestjarðavegur (Road 60). It’s 82.7 km long. The coastal road is gravel. 4x4 vehicle recommended. The road is subject to rapid weather changes. The wind is usually quite strong. High winds blow here all year long.
The region is sparsely populated and pretty remote. In case of a breakdown, there is very little in the way of passing traffic or inhabitants around, and no cell phone service in parts. The journey offers an exhilarating driving experience, with superb views of the sea and fjords. It overlooks the Breiðafjörður bay. High risk of avalanches.
