Kahler Asten is a mountain peak at an elevation of 841m (2,759ft) above the sea level, located in the district of Hochsauerland, in the German state of North Rhine-Westphalia.

How long is the road to Kahler Asten?

Located on the western part of the country, the road to the summit is totally paved. It comprises L540 and L640 roads. Starting from Oberkirchen in the High Sauerland District, the drive is 13.0 km (8.07 miles) long. It’s a beautiful drive with stunning views. The road has a few narrow parts and hairpins, and steep sections, hitting a 6.4% of maximum gradient through some of the ramps.

Is Kahler Asten open?

Set high in the Rothaar range, access to the summit is typically open all year round but short term closures are common in winter due to dangerous weather conditions.

Is Kahler Asten worth it?

It is a very popular area, and really crowded in holidays, receiving more than 500,000 visitors annually. The summit hosts a 20 meter high tower, a restaurant, a hotel (Hotel Kahler Asten) and a small nature museum. On top of the mountain it is possible to park your car. There is a spacious toll parking lot.
