Tunnel des Montets
Located in the Haute-Savoie department of France, Tunnel des Montets is a mountain tunnel used by trains which also allows road traffic to avoid theCol des Montets mountain pass when there is heavy snowfall or avalanche danger.
The tunnel, also known as the Col des Montets Tunnel, is a single track railway tunnel which has dual use as a road tunnel. The entrance of this tunnel is located at Montroc village after Argentiere. It was inaugurated on 1st November 1907 and re-opened in December 2014.
The tunnel is 1.883m long at an elevation of 1.386m above the sea level. It takes cars from Montroc through to Le Buet and Vallorcine when the Col des Montets pass is closed due to heavy snow. All vehicles are restricted to a maximum height of 2.5m and a maximum length of 5.5m. The speed limit is 50 km/h. The distance between two vehicles should be at least 100m.
