The route is located in the department of Var and the department of Alpes-Maritimes, within the Esterel National Park, just a few kilometers from St. Tropez and Cannes.
When was Corniche de l’Esterel built?
The curvy and winding route is totally paved. It comprises D559 and D6098 roads. Construction of the road started in 1901 and opened to traffic on April, 1903 at the initiative of Abel Ballif, President of the Touring Club de France. The road is also known as Corniche d'Or thanks to the golden aspects of the rocks overlooking it.
How long is Corniche de l’Esterel?
Tucked away on the southeastern part of the country, the road is 30 km (18.64 miles) long, running from Saint Raphael to Théoule sur Mer. Bordered by the most pristine waters in the region, the road is never straight and level for long, with a number of turns. The route is crossed by railway bridges on numerous occasions. The road is very busy, so better avoid weekends and holidays.

The road is very scenic running along the sea. Better at first lights of dawn or close to sundown. Due its beauty, it’s often compared to the Strada Statale Amalfitana in Italy, or the Pacific Coast Highway in California, USA. It should be discovered at low speed by stopping at the many parking lots. They offer breathtaking views of the jagged rocks and creeks with crystal clear water. The road is open all year round and offers extraordinary panoramas.
