Zillertaler Höhenstraße is a very scenic mountain road located in Austria’s western state of Tyrol. It’s one of the scenic Austrian Alpine roads.

When was the Zillertaler Höhenstraße built?

The road was originally built in 1963 as a service road to facilitate the cultivation of Alpine pastures for local farmers. Later, because of the panoramic splendor, it was opened to the public.

How long is the Zillertaler Höhenstraße?

This toll road is totally paved. It’s 50 km (31 miles) long, running to Arbisjochkopf, at 2.133m (6,998ft) above sea level. It can be reached via five different access roads located in Ried, Kaltenbach, Aschau, Zellberg, and Hippach (the furthest village from the entrance to the Ziller Valley).

Is the Zillertaler Höhenstraße challenging?

The Zillertaler Höhenstraße is pretty challenging, with hairpin turns and narrow parts. It hits a 20% maximum gradient through some of the ramps. It can be used by buses up to a length of 10.5 m. It has a total altitude difference of 1.400m. You can't drive fast since there are many blind corners and narrow parts, but it's a lot of fun to drive and has beautiful views.
