The road was originally built in 1963 as a service road to facilitate the cultivation of Alpine pastures for local farmers. Later, because of the panoramic splendor, it was opened to the public.

This toll road is totally paved. It’s 50 km (31 miles) long, running to Arbisjochkopf, at 2.133m (6,998ft) above sea level. It can be reached via five different access roads located in Ried, Kaltenbach, Aschau, Zellberg, and Hippach (the furthest village from the entrance to the Ziller Valley).

It has a total altitude difference of 1.400m. You can't drive fast since there are many blind corners and narrow parts, but it's a lot of fun to drive and has beautiful views.
