A delightful yet challenging road to Finstertalspeicher
Finstertalspeicher is a reservoir at an elevation of 2.325m (7,627ft) above the sea level, located in Tyrol, in western Austria.
The small supply road to the reservoir, also known as Speicher Finstertal or Finstertal Stausee, is narrow, steep and paved. The highlight is a 360-degree loop that leads halfway through a small tunnel (which unfortunately can be closed). The road is usually impassable in winters.
Tucked away in the Stubai Alps, the road is pretty steep. Starting from Kühtai, the ascent is 3.4km (2.11 miles) long. Over this distance the elevation gain is 343 meters. The average gradient is 10.08%.
