The road to the summit is entirely unpaved and quite challenging. It features 18 hairpin turns, very steep sections, and dangerous drop-offs.
Is Monte Stol open in winters?
Set high in the Stola mountain range, on the edge of the Alps and the Dinaric Mountains, the road to the summit is typically open all year round, but short-term closures are common in winter due to dangerous weather conditions.

Starting from Sedlo, the road to the summit is 11.5 km (7.14 miles) long. Over this distance, the elevation gain is 864 m. The average gradient is 7.51%.
Is the road to Monte Stol worth it?
The drive offers stunning views. At the summit, there’s a cattle farm known as Planina Božca. There’s a beautiful view of the Kanin, the Julian Alps, Krn, Matajur, and when the sky is clear, you can see the Adriatic Sea and the Dolomites. On the way to the summit, there’s a memorial to Joshua Goldstein, who passed away in a paragliding accident in the area on July 10, 2018.
