Pereval Gumbashi, one of the most picturesque roads in the Caucasus
Pereval Gumbashi is a high mountain pass at an elevation of 2.051m (6,729ft) above the sea level, located in the Karachay-Cherkess Republic, Russia.
The winding paved road to the summit is very curvy with many hairpin turns. It’s called А157. The road is 59.3 km long running west-east from Tereze (a village in the Malokarachayevsky District in the Karachay-Cherkess Republic) towards Karachayevsk (a town in the Karachay-Cherkess Republic, on the Kuban River). At the summit is a small bar.
It’s an adventurous drive. It’s said to be one of the most picturesque and magnificent roads in the Caucasus. It’s subject to occasional landslides, and frequently icy. The road to the summit was built in the 1930’s. The top offers amazing views of the Main Caucasian Range, as well as an unforgettable view of Mount Elbrus.
