The pass, also known as Pasul Palma, is located in the historical region of Bukovina, in the northeastern part of the country. It connects the Moldovița Valley to the Suceava Plateau.
What’s on the summit of Ciumarna Pass?
At the highest point of the pass stands a monument in the shape of a human palm, called The Drumarilor Monument (Palma). This symbolizes work and strength, commemorating the moment in 1968 when two teams of road builders, approaching from opposite directions, met and shook hands, marking the completion of the road and overcoming the challenges of the project.
Is Ciumarna Pass paved?
Set high in the Obcina Mare range of the Carpathian Mountains, the road to the summit is fully paved but quite steep. It’s called DN17A. The road surface is in poor condition and features numerous hairpin turns.
How long is Ciumarna Pass?
The road over the summit is 61km (38 miles) long, running south to north from Câmpulung Moldovenesc to Marginea.
