How to get to the scenic Golemo Ezero Lake?

Golemo Ezero is a high mountain post-glacial lake at an elevation of 2,272m (7,454ft) above sea level, located in the Republic of North Macedonia. It’s one of the highest roads in the country.

Where is Golemo Ezero?

The lake is located south of Peristeri, the third-highest mountain in North Macedonia, in the southwestern part of the country, within National Park Pelister. It’s situated in the original part of the Ezerska River, a left tributary of the river Sapuncica.

Why is Golemo Ezero famous?

The lake (which means "Large Lake" in English) is 233 meters long, 162 meters wide, and has a depth of 14.5 meters. At this depth, it ranks as the third deepest natural lake and the deepest mountain lake in the Republic of Macedonia.

How long is the road to Golemo Ezero?

The road to the lake is totally unpaved and pretty challenging, with narrow sections and steep parts. 4x4 vehicles only. Starting from Trnovo, the road is 17km (10.56 miles) long. Over this distance, the elevation gain is 906 m and the average gradient is 5.32%. It’s usually impassable in winters.

How to get to Dimitar Ilievski-Murato mountain hut?

Located on the shore of the lake, there is a mountain hut named after Dimitar Ilievski-Murato. He was a mountaineer who was born in Bitola and died on Mount Everest. He was the first national of modern Republic of Macedonia ever to climb the highest peak of the world, Mount Everest. He reached the summit on 10 May 1989, and after summiting he didn't return to any of the camps, and is officially missing. The hut is open year-round. In the kitchen, you can prepare food while they sell drinks. It has water but no electricity. In the hut, there are 60 beds.
