Where is the Kaitawa Bridge?
The bridge is located several kilometers southeast of Pahiatua, north of Wellington, in the southwestern part of New Zealand’s North Island. The bridge is the starting point for the challenging Ōtaki Gorge Road.
How long is the Kaitawa Bridge?
The wooden suspension bridge across the Ōtaki River is 92 meters long. It has heavy vehicle restrictions, allowing only one vehicle on the bridge at a time. The width limit is 2.5 meters. In 1986, modifications were made to the structure to meet modern clearance standards, enabling stock trucks to cross without damaging the bridge.
When was the Kaitawa Bridge built?
Completed in 1932, the steel through-truss road bridge features a reinforced concrete deck and substructure. It carries the fully paved Waihoanga Road but is one lane only. The northern side of the bridge leads to several dead-end roads.
