Omarama Clay Cliffs
The Omarama Clay Cliffs are silt and gravel pinnacle formations near the southern end of the Mackenzie Basin, in the South Island of New Zealand. The road is bumpy, drive slowly and avoid holes!
The road to the cliffs is gravel. This is a maintained road where a high clearance 2WD vehicle is able to travel safely at low speeds on long dry straight-of-ways, without losing control due to wash boarding, ruts, or dips. Definitely worth the drive along the dusty road to see this masterpiece from nature. It’s a dusty gravel potholed private road. You will be asked for a donation towards the upkeep of the road into the area at the gate $5 per vehicle. Beyond the cliffs the road goes on and quickly deteriorates. After this point it’s a high clearance, 4-wheel drive track.
