How Long is the Haast Highway?

Part of State Highway 6, Haast Highway is fully paved and stretches about 276 kilometers (171 miles) along the rugged west coast of the South Island. It was completed in the 1960’s.

Where Does the Haast Highway Start and End?

Located in the Westland District, the road runs south to north from Haast (a small town beside the Haast River) to Hokitika (the district's largest town and administrative seat).

Is the Haast Highway Worth the Drive?

Plan for around 3-4 hours to complete the drive without stops, though you’ll want extra time to pause at various scenic points along the way. It’s an unforgettable route with stretches right beside the coast, dotted with hidden bays and scenic spots perfect for taking in the incredible landscape.
