Located in the Waipu Gorge Scenic Reserve, the road through the gorge is very narrow, totally unpaved, and quite curvy. It’s called Waipu Gorge Road. The road is very winding and can be slippery. Don't speed there, as you’ll probably end up off the road due to the many sharp turns. It has been featured in Rally New Zealand.

The road, running through stunning native bush and forest, is 20.4 km (12.67 miles) long, running north-south from State Highway 1 to State Highway 12, near Maungaturoto.

How challenging is the road through Waipu Gorge?

The road, a hidden gem running through the gorge, has some dangerous drop-offs above the Ahuroa River. Parking is limited, so care should be taken. The road can be closed at any time due to slips or trees falling across the road.
