The road through the Waipu Gorge is not for the sissies
Waipu Gorge Road is a winding but fairly smooth metalled road located in the Northland Region of New Zealand.
The narrow unsealed road is a hidden gem, leading to the Piroa Falls, through the Waipu Gorge Scenic Reserve. The road is 20.4km (12.67 miles) long, running north-south from State Highway 1 to State Highway 12. The road has some dangerous drop offs running above the Ahuroa River.
Parking is limited so care should be taken here. The drive is through stunning native bush and forest. The road can be closed anytime due to slips and trees coming down over the road. The road has been featured in the Rally New Zealand.
