Broken River Ski Area is a ski resort at an elevation of 1,543m (5,062ft) above sea level, located on New Zealand's South Island. The ski field often claims to have the longest ski season in Australasia.

Where is Broken River Ski Area?

The resort is located just a 90-minute drive and 100 km west of Christchurch, in the Canterbury region, to the north of Mount Cheeseman Ski Resort. Broken River is the ski field most likely to remain open in the Canterbury region, even when others are closed. The road is less likely to be closed because it is not prone to avalanches.

Is the Road to Broken River Ski Area Unpaved?

Set high in the Craigieburn Range, in the heart of the Southern Alps, the rugged road to the summit is completely unpaved but well maintained. Chains must be carried—even if you have a four-wheel drive—and a 4WD vehicle is highly recommended. Camper vans are not allowed to ascend the road and must park at the entrance near State Highway 73.

How Challenging is the Road to Broken River Ski Area?

The road features narrow sections, steep gradients, and challenging drop-offs. While it is generally kept in good condition, the alpine environment means weather can change rapidly, impacting road conditions throughout the day. It’s important to respect any road closures or locked gates, as there is always a good reason for them being shut.

How Long is the Road to Broken River Ski Area?

The access road to Broken River Ski Area, or "BR" as locals call it, is 7.8 km (4.84 miles) long. It begins off the Great Alpine Highway, officially known as State Highway 73 ('SH 73'). Over this distance, the elevation gain is 782m, and the average gradient is 10.02%. The road ends at the main car park (Hanomag Car Park). From there, the Tyndall Tram will transport you on a spectacular 4-minute ride to the ticket office. The tram runs daily in winter from 8:30-11:30 am and 3:30-5:30 pm.
