Driving the challenging coastal road to Stony Bay in NZ
Located in Northern Coromandel in the Coromandel region, the unsealed, narrow, and winding road leading to Stony Bay is very challenging. Be prepared for larger traffic numbers over the summer period.
Where is Stony Bay?
The bay is located on the North Island of New Zealand, at the eastern tip of the Coromandel Peninsula. It hosts a campsite known as Stony Bay Campsite.
Can I drive to Stony Bay?
The road to the bay is entirely unpaved. It’s called Stony Bay Road. Starting from Port Charles, the road is 6.7 km (4.16 miles) long.
When is the best time to drive Stony Bay Road?
During winter, the road is relatively quiet, but during the summer months, especially from mid-December to mid-January, it is highly trafficked with campervans, trucks, and vehicles towing boats. Start your drive early to avoid the crowds. Caution is advised at all times, but during the Christmas holiday season, it is recommended that beginner drivers avoid this road.
How challenging is the Stony Bay Road?
The road is not easy, so having some driving experience is better. It’s remote, narrow, unsealed, and has tight corners. There is limited space to pass other vehicles traveling in the opposite direction. Some vehicles you encounter could be towing boats or large trailers. You will need to be prepared to reverse sections of the road depending on where you meet oncoming traffic. Expect the unsealed road surface to become slippery during long periods of rain. Take extra care and drive at low speeds while navigating the narrow road.
