The road to Tuzanchi in the Pamir Mountains will take your breath away

Tuzanchi is an international high mountain peak with an elevation of 4.893m (16,053ft) above sea level, situated on the border between China and Tajikistan.

Where is Tuzanchi?

The peak is located on the border between the Gorno-Badakhshan Autonomous Region of Tajikistan and the Xinjiang Autonomous Region of China. A military road on the Chinese side leads to the summit, while on the Tajik side, there is no road to the top.

How long is the road to Tuzanchi in the Pamir Mountains?

The road to the summit is fully unpaved. Starting from Heiyeke, the road is 17.7 km (10.99 miles) long. The drive is very defiant, featuring 23 hairpin turns and an elevation gain of 1164 m. The average gradient is 6.67%. Set high in the Pamir Mountains, the drive requires a 4x4 vehicle. It’s totally impassable in winters. Facilities like electricity, medical aid, hot running water, western toilets etc. are rare to find.
