Ultimate 4WD Destination: Chanther Gali
Chanther Gali is a high mountain pass at an elevation of 4,558m (14,954ft) above sea level, located in Azad Jammu and Kashmir, in the disputed Kashmir region of Pakistan. It's one of the highest roads in the country.
Where is Chanther Gali?
Set high in the northeastern part of the country, the pass, also known as Shounter Pass, is located in Neelum Valley. The valley is very beautiful, with panoramic views, towering hills on both sides of Neelam River, lush green forests, streams, and attractive surroundings.
How long is the road to Chanther Gali?
The road to the summit is entirely unpaved. 4x4 vehicles only. It’s about 80km (50 miles) long, running east-west from Gorikot to Shounter. The road condition is not good and not suitable for low-clearance vehicles. Moreover, the government of Pakistan has allotted a budget for a tunnel that would link the Shounter valley of Azad Kashmir and Rattu village of Astore, Gilgit-Baltistan, through the pass. The tunnel would be approximately 10-12 km long, and after completion, the distance from Islamabad to Khunjerab (Pak-China border) would be shortened by 8 hours.
Is the road to Chanther Gali open?
The pass is accessible only a few months of the year due to heavy snow and harsh weather conditions. In winter, the roads in the area are usually blocked due to heavy snowfall, and it is very difficult to reach the upper parts of the valley. The harsh winter season and heavy snowfall will not allow you to reach there.
