Raakhi Gaaj Project is the Asia’s Second Largest Steel Bridge

Located in the Punjab province of Pakistan, Raakhi Gaaj Project is said to be the Asia’s Second Largest Steel Bridge. It’s one of the most spectacular bridges in the world.

Raakhi Gaaj Project

The new bridge was completed in 2019 to improve the National Highway 70 (N-70), one of the main highways of the country with the assistance of Japan. The hilly portion of N-70 had seven difficult turns to negotiate to climb up the high mountain of Girdo to reach for Munro or Bewata. The old road was constructed in the late 19th century by the British engineers. The new bridge helps to mitigate the hazard of land sliding which affects the road as well as the vehicle passage. Big trailers and trucks carrying heavy loads, passenger buses, vans and picnic lovers riding vehicles are found frequently moving on the route after the steel bridges gave a solution to the most dangerous and sharp curves.

This is the second largest project of its kind in Asia and the very first in Pakistan. The new bridge is comprised of eight steel bridges that have become fully functional for heavy traffic. The cost of total project is 1.2 Billion rupees. The eight steel bridges are 1.5 kilometer long with pillars taller than 150 feet. The architectural gem project had decreased vehicles’ operational and maintenance cost and travel hours between Punjab and Balochistan provinces.
