Driving the Brutal 4x4 Road to Aksu Hot Spring in the Altai Mountains

Aksu is a hot spring located at an elevation of 2,638m (8,654ft) above sea level, on the western edge of Tsengel Sum in Bayan-Ölgii province, Mongolia.

Why Is Aksu Hot Spring Famous?

The hot spring is situated far from the center of Tsengel in the western part of Mongolia, near the Chinese border. It is famous for its spa resort. In the 18th century, Tuva doctors discovered the spring, which is believed to cure many diseases. Around 20 years ago, it was converted into a treatment and recreation center.

How Long Is the Road to Aksu Hot Spring?

The rough road to the hot spring, located within Altai Tavan Bogd National Park, is completely unpaved and highly challenging. It is narrow, steep, and impassable during winter. A 4x4 vehicle with high clearance is required. The road to the hot spring stretches 99.5 km (61.82 miles), starting from Tsengel Hayrhan Suma.

Is the Road to Aksu Hot Spring Worth the Drive?

Situated in the northern part of the Altai mountain range, the drive is incredibly scenic, offering breathtaking views of Khurgan and Khoton lakes. To reach the resort, you must cross a small wooden bridge known as the Khurgan and Khoton Lakes Bridge. It’s said to be one of the most spectacular bridges in the world.
