Dare to drive the dangerous Arabel Pass
Pereval Arabel is a high mountain pass at an elevation of 3,839m (12,595ft) above sea level, located in the southern part of the Issyk-Kul region of Kyrgyzstan. It’s one of the highest roads in the country.
Where is Arabel Pass?
The pass is situated in the northeastern part of Kyrgyzstan, near the Barskoon Gorge and the Kumtor gold mine.
Is the Road to Arabel Pass Unpaved?
The road to the summit is completely unpaved and partly in very poor condition. Only 4WD vehicles are recommended. It is not suitable for heavy road motorcycles. Drivers must watch out for lorries speeding (up to 130-140 km/h) on the flat parts of the road leading to the gold mine.
How Long Is the Road Through Arabel Pass?
The pass stretches for about 200 km (125 miles), running west-east from Naryn to the A364 road north of Seok Pass.
Can I Drive Through Arabel Pass?
Set high in the Tian Shan Mountains, the road is usually impassable from November to March. To drive the pass, you will need a border zone permit. The first checkpoint is located before the first zigzag (when driving from Barskoon).
